Can we mimic nature?

In forestry, harvesting often attempts to mimic 'Natural Disturbance Types'. Although on the surface we may meet objectives, the underlying ecological relationships of primary forest can be lost for centuries. When we put nature and human impacts side-by-side, how do we determine we're successful?
